Task composition and vocational education and training – a firm level perspective

In Germany, about half of the school-leavers – irrespective their school-leaving certificate start an apprenticeship instead entering labour market or university. Firms act as gatekeepers who influence which apprenticeship. Previous studies have provided important information on reasons firms train. By analysing tasks, I consider additional characteristic that probably influences firms’ training decisions. The aim my study is twofold: examine whether tasks performed in a firm first correlate with decision to provide and second newly hired apprentices. use BIBB Establishment Panel Training Competence Development estimate hybrid models task shares main independent variables. results suggest composition affects decisions concerning vocational education (VET). high share routine manual are more likely be involved VET. Moreover, accompanied by higher demand for apprentices lower secondary certificates, interactive highest (i.e. Abitur).
